First time at Naadam? Start here
The honest one-page briefing: what to book when, what is free, and the mistakes every first-timer makes.
Book flights and hotels two to four months out — Naadam week (the public holiday runs 11–15 July) fills Ulaanbaatar. Decide early whether you want opening-ceremony seats: the only reliable way from abroad is a tour package, since official online sales open days before the festival, in Mongolian, and sell out within the hour.
You do not need a single ticket to have a full Naadam: the Deeltei Mongol parade (10 July), all archery and shagai, every horse race at Khui Doloon Khudag, and the city's evening concerts are free. Afternoon wrestling tickets after the ceremony crowd leaves are cheap and often available same-day.
Plan one dawn: leave at 6 am for Khui Doloon Khudag on 12 July, watch a race finish come over the horizon through the dust, eat khuushuur at a ger café, and you will understand why Mongolians drive out at that hour.
Expect closures — many museums, banks and restaurants rest during the holiday — and expect traffic around the stadium and the racing steppe. Build slack into your plan, and consider adding a countryside naadam (see our calendar): smaller, closer, and for many travellers the highlight of the trip.
